*POSTPONED* Household Hazardous Waste Event
April 25, 2020 - 7:00 AM - April 25, 2020 - 1:00 PM Show Barn

Kerr County residents can get rid of hazardous household items from 8 a.m. to noon April 25th at the Hill Country Youth Event Center, 3785 Texas 27.

The annual household hazardous waste event, co-sponsored by the city of Kerrville and Kerr County, is first-come, first-served, and vehicles must be inside the gate prior to noon.

“As with previous events, we are expecting a large turnout,” said David Barrera, Kerrville’s assistant director of public works. “We want to take this opportunity to give back to the community and practice good stewardship.”

The event is not open to businesses.

All items must be in containers of 5 gallons or smaller and should be placed in boxes for easier transport.

Accepted items includes batteries, cleaners, pesticides, insecticides, yard fungicides and herbicides, pool chemicals, latex and oil-based paints, paint thinners and removers, fluorescent bulbs, thermometers, thermostats, propane tanks with less than a 50-pound capacity and automotive tires (limit eight per vehicle, with or without rims).

Accepted electronics include all types of computers and accessories (PC, CPU towers, laptops, servers, keyboards, etc.), printers, fax machines, DVD players, stereos, copiers, telephones, cellphones and chargers, answering machines, video and camera equipment, video game systems, cable boxes, DVRs, microwaves, cable wires, power cords and strips. Televisions and CRT monitors are accepted, but limited to two per vehicle.

Prohibited items include medications, medical waste, ammunition, explosives, biohazards, radioactive material, gas cylinders, antifreeze, used motor oil and containers without a label.

Barrera noted that latex (water-based) paint can be picked up with household garbage, if it is first allowed to completely dry in its container.

He added that residents can help minimize hazardous waste accumulation by:

  • Using non-hazardous alternatives to commonly used solutions. For example, making window cleaner with 1/8 cup of white vinegar and 1 cup water.
  • Buying such items in smaller quantities.
  • Asking a neighbor, family member or charity if they are in need of items not in use.
